Check out some of the photos here!!

Christmas Day was a wonderful mix of swimming in the sea, drying off in the sunshine, and enjoying plenty of wine and food with Vicky and her friends!

Phase 4 photos!!
Things really seem to be falling into place at the moment... and we've even been making arrangements for our next trip. Which is just as well, considering we set off in a week and a half!!

At that time we were having a Lazy Sunday, following a Productive Saturday
(and had updated the Phase 4 photos again!)
We haven't been planning much for our next set of travels (other than the general destinations), but we're hoping to get a bit more organised in the coming weeks. I've remembered to renew my Flickr membership, at least!!

Yup, that's right... at the end of the year, we'll be jetting off again! We won't bore you with all the details yet (mostly because we don't know them ourselves yet), but we do know we'll be heading back to Japan for a short break, before heading on to Indonesia, New Zealand and the Cook Islands.

The other exciting(!) news is that we've added the photos for April and May, so here they are

At that time we had no idea where the last few months have gone, but the photos may help... (yes, they've actually been updated!)
More work travels (to France for me, and Germany for Tom), a long weekend in Budapest, and lots of drinking/celebrating/catching up with people... I think that pretty much covers our activities for the last few months!

At that time we were drinking port, eating mincepies, icing the Christmas cake, wrapping the last of the presents, and updating the photos!!
Work and travelling have been keeping us busy throughout the last few months. A brief trip to France, a week in Jersey, a sejourn to Gambia...

It was also Mum's 65th birthday/retirement party, and Tom and I celebrated 8 wonderful (well, eventful at least) years together.

At that time we had a REAL matress!! (That's right, after almost 12 months, the air matress finally gave up the ghost...)
We've been taking lots of photos recently, so I've updated the site again. "Hurrah!" I hear you cry. Well, there's no need to thank me. (Any donations kindly accepted, mind you... and yes, I can be bribed into putting up more flattering photos of people)

For those of you not in England at the moment - we are currently experiencing freakishly wonderful weather. Not only out of season (26'C today, hot hot hot and sunny), but also out of character (I'm sure it rains at least 78% of the time in Bristol)... brilliant weather for BBQs and frantic weeding in the garden.

Yeees....things have been a bit quiet 'round the cave recently. This is in large part to do with the much-used, much-travelled laptop deciding it needs a much-earned break, and going on strike. We have a whole host of new photos to put up as soon as things are up and running again... In the meantime, however, you'll just have to do with a bit of reminiscing!

Yeeees... American Airways are really NOT our favourite people at the moment. By serving us a breakfast that made us physically ill, then losing our luggage thay have knocked Iberia off the top of the "Most Annoying Airline" roll of honour. Bah!

At that time we were dozing in Nazca
Cusco was a fab break, and we spent far too much money (is that possible?) on eating well and drinking even better!

We well and truly "did" Machu Picchu, whilst successfully avoiding any strenuous exercise (such as the much-trodden Inca Trail). Have to admit that despite early misgivings ("it's not just going to be another dry-stone wall is it?"), we had a wonderful time, and Machu Picchu definitely lived up to the hype!

15 hours by bus later, and we're in Nazca. Today we took a trip in a tiny plane over the famous Lines: a really incredible experience!!!

At that time we were livin' it up in a swankeee hotel in Cusco
We hadn't realised how long it had been since:
a) we'd watched TV
b) we'd had hot running water
c) we'd been warm at night

So, we decided to check into a LOVELY hotel in Cusco, and live it up for a few nights - pretending we've got loads of cash, going out for gorgeous meals and driking cocktails!!!

Shame we won't be able to keep it up...

The Amazon Rainforest was amazing. We stayed at an eco lodge for two nights and either side of that, in the "commercial" town of Rurrenabaque. The whole experience was incredible. And yes, we had a close encounter of the bird-eating tarantula kind! Wicked!

We're now relaxing for a few days on the shore of Lake Titicaca, before heading on into Peru.

Easter Island was incredible, and we enjoyed every minute of our stay there...It has well and truly gone down on the (ever increasing) "List of Places to Go Back To".

After a few more flights and night at the airport, we've finally arrived in La Paz, Bolivia. At over 3,500m above sea level, we're going nowhere fast!!!

At that time we were finding it hard to believe we've actually made it to Easter Island!!!
Hong Kong to L.A.: 12.5 hours
L.A.: 3 hours
L.A. to Santiago: 13 hours
Santiago: 11 hours
Santiago to Easter Island: 5 hours
Total time in continuous transit: 44.5 hours

We've made it to Easter Island, so did our bags! We've found a really nice place to stay, and are busy organising the next few days. From what we've seen of the island already, it was worth every minute we spent getting here!!!

At that time we were digesting breakfast at Santiago airport, Chile, en-route to Easter Island...
Hong Kong was a good chance for us to say toodle-oo to Asia for a while. We spent our time pottering around the city and watching the world go by - beautifully illuminated by the skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island.

We are presently about 32 hours into our second mammoth journey. Hong Kong >> LA >> Lima >> Santiago (where we are now) >> Easter Island.

At that time we were installed in a tiny room in Hong Kong, psyching ourselves up for an evening excursion around town.
Ah... Cathay Pacific... Lovely.

We made it to Hong Kong with no problems, but are still a little the worse for wear in terms of sleep after a couple of overnight trains and a three night mosquito hunt in Koh Tao. The island wasn't quite what we expected but we had fun on our hired scooters and had a snorkel or two around the bay.

Our final night in Bangkok was spent in style courtesy of Lynne who entertained us on the terrace at the Oriental Hotel... Even if it did take an army of hotel staff to bring us all together!

(Be sure to check out the blog and the photos as we have free internet access for a few days!)

At that time we were plotting our dash from Bangkok to the beaches of Ko Tao...
Cambodia was a wonderful experience, but we're now back in Bangkok plotting our escape for a second time.

We're hoping to spend some time in Ko Tao, a little island just north of the popular Ko Samui. Hopefully we'll get some quality time to make friends with the sea and chill out on land before heading back to the big city for our flight to Hong Kong.

At that time we were enjoying our last evening in Cambodia!
Three cocktails for a grand total of GBP2.50...can't be bad!

Sadly, tonight is our last night in Cambodia - tomorrow we head back to Thailand. We're hoping to spend some time island hopping, but nothing's planned as yet. Have had a wonderful time here, and would recommend it to anyone! We're genuinly sad to be leaving.

At that time we had decided to spend longer in Cambodia!
We've decided to give Laos a miss (for now), and add it to the list of Phase 4 destinations. Cambodia is amazing! We've been in Siem Reap for 3 full days now, and have expereinced so much. The temples at Angkor are simply breath-taking!

At that time we were sweaty and tired in Cambodia.
The journey from Bangkok to Battambang in Cambodia has been interesting... Knackered trains, pick up trucks with whole families clinging onto the back (complete with a chicken) and very cunning pickpockets at the Thai-Cambodian border.

Luckily we escaped intact - let's see what tomorrow's boat journey to Siem Reap brings!

At that time we were planning our trip into Cambodia and Laos. I sense another train journey...
The l o n g journey from Luxor to Bangkok (via Cairo, Barcelona, Madrid, Stockholm and Helsinki) was actually quite enjoyable. We had some good reading matter, we were warm, we were fed, and we got drunk. It might have been snowing outside (in Helsinki and Stockholm, not Cairo...), but we were happily enjoying a very good bottle of wine...!

Time in Bangkok has been spent shopping and planning the next bit: Cambodia.

At that time we had just arrived at a snow covered Helsinki airport, with a fistfull of unchangable Egyptian pounds... bah!
Actually, I think the next few hours before our flight to Bangkok will be quite pleasant, as I spotted a pub on our way through to the transit desk (oh, and an ATM too) - Hurrah!

At that time we were relaxing in Aswan after escaping the miserable weather in Cairo on a lovely sleeper train.
We've made it to the Nubian city of Aswan, our base for the next few days. Tomorrow we have a scary 3:30am bus to catch to Abu Simbel temple, a three hour drive further south!

We've followed the tour group down here, and are appreciating the warmer weather after Cairo decided to rain on us yesterday. The pyramids and sphynx were awe inspiring of course, but we particularly enjoyed pottering around the souks in the Islamic quarter of Cairo.

At that time we were in Cairo with Bran-chan!!
The border crossing from Jordan was relatively uneventful...although the boat did leave over 2 hours late.

Since being in Egypt, we've snorkled in Dahab, camelled and walked up Mt Sinai (and walked down the 3,000 or so steps of repetence), gone under the Suez canal, made it to Cairo, and met up with Brandon!

At that time we were preparing for the Jordan-Egypt border crossing...
We've explored Amman (and Jerash), dipped in the Dead Sea (and covered ourselved in mud), pottered round Petra (for 7 hours!!), bedded down in a Bedouin camp, cavorted on camels in the desert, and acquired things in Aqaba! (that just about sums up the last four days, anyway...)

At that time we had just strolled around the old quarter of the beautiful and very romantic city of Tallinn in Estonia.
We made it to our final stop on the long route home.

The bus journey was uneventful, and for once we had some currency of the place we were headed to BEFORE entering the country... except we forgot to actually check if Estonia (being in Europe) used Euros. Sinful - I know! Lucky for us the bus station had a handy exchange booth. Phew!

At that time we had just taken a romantic evening stroll along Nevsky Prospekt (THE main street in St Petersburg)
Ok...so we might have been a little tipsy on a stroll in St Petersburg, but would you expect anything less in a place where cognac is so reasonably priced! (huge thank you to tour-guide Gleb in Ekaterinburg for the tip-off re. Armenian Cognac!)

All that aside, St Petersburg is proving to be a really lovely city, and we're looking forward to pottering back at some point in the future to properly do it justice!

...actually, only Tom was being bitten by ferel dogs, but that's life I guess.

Well, we've finished the "trans-siberian" leg of the journey, after around 10,000km of rail travel since Shanghai! In fact, we've only got one train journey left: to St Petersburg.

Moscow so far has proved to be a really beautiful place, with some seriously extortionate prices! (we're making the most of one, and trying to prevent the other from making the most of us...)

Irkutsk was lovely and sunny...until we went to Lake Baikal, when it rained! We had a very relaxed four days, though, and the market was put to excellent use (stocking up for the next two-night train journey)

We arrived safely in Ekaterinburg, and have visited the Europe-Asia boarder (setting foot in Europe for the first time in over a year...well, we were excited!), as well as various sites associated with the Romanovs. All very interesting!

At that time we getting sunburnt in Siberia...
We were stuck at the border between Mongolia and Russia for over 12 hours. Most of that time without a toilet. It wasn't that bad, I have to admit. The train was comfortable enough, and we had plenty of food and great company ("Hello!" to Cory and Carry, if they get a chance to check this ;) ).

At that time we were nursing our nether regions after a day of horse-riding in the rolling hills of Mongolia.
We're back in Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia, after a fantastic two day experience of the reality of this beautiful country. We made friends with busy mongolian herdsmen, their crazy kids, their confused livestock and their stubbon horses...

Tomorrow we are back on the trans-mongolian train for the most tedious of the two border crossings. Where did I put my book?

At that time we had travelled around 1,500km away from Beijing. By train.
We're now in Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia, and so far we're loving it! Unlike what we saw of China: it's clean, it doesn't stink, and there's no sewage, rotting vegetable matter and vomit flowing down the streets. At that time we had just been to the "HELL OF THE 8 WONDERS OF THE WORLD" in Xi'an.
Xi'an has been interesting so far. It's a walled city filled to the brim with crazy green taxis, tour buses and muslim food.

Among the highlights so far have been:
- Nearly hiring a prostitute (well massage DOES sound like message)
- The Bell and Drum towers (with live traditional music performances)
- A tour to see the terracotta warriors (and many MANY more fabulous attractions)
- Cool weather.

At that time we were the furthest away from the coast either of us has ever been... (I think...)
Shanghai is now a distant wiff of a memory. We watched from the train windows as it disappeared in a cloud of smog, and we trundled through beautiful rolling green hills and farmland areas, as we wound our way inland to Xi'an.

From what we've seen of it so far, Xi'an is quite different to Shanghai. It doesn't smell nearly as bad, for a start. And everything's even cheaper! More to come...

At that time we were in a state of confusion after taking a surreal cable car ride through a tunnel under the Huangpu river in Shanghai, which happens to be filled with flashing lights.
Shanghai has been an experience neither of us will forget in a hurry. We have strolled along the Bund, injured our necks looking at the skyscrapers in Pudong, survived rush hour on the underground, sipped jasmine tea in an old teahouse near the Yuyuan gardens, stuffed ourselves silly on fantastic cheap chinese food and repeated the daily ritual of scrubbing off the grime that this worryingly dirty city bathes you in each day. Tomorrow we take our first long distance train - Xi'an here we come!

At that time we were running away from a typhoon...
We've had a really fantastic time in Ishigaki and Iriomote...the highlight possibly being kayaking into the wilderness of Iriomote, and hiking up to a beautiful waterfall where we swam about a bit. Absolutely brilliant! Anyway, we've been given warning that a typhoon is on the way, so we're cutting short our holiday, and flying out a day early. The weather for now remains perfect, though!

At that time we were melting and burnt.
We've left the mainland, flown over 1,500km, and have landed in the beautiful, but very, very hot islands of Okinawa. We've been in Ishigaki for three nights and we head to Iriomote tomorrow.

PS. It's hot.

At that time we were watching a festival from our hotel window...
We've scooted around Nagoya, pottered through the most revered shrine in Japan, dashed across the Ise peninsular and come to rest in the second biggest metropolis in Japan - Osaka.

We arrived just in time for a festival too... Find out more here.

At that time we were homeless, jobless, and drunk.
That's it! We've run away! The apartment keys have been handed over, all our stuff has been sent home. Our backpacks are packed, and we're on our way! Completely free for the first time...no exams, no work, no deadlines...no...um...income....ah.

At that time we were STILL buried under a pile of boxes. Drunk.
Have updated the photos again. Going out too much. Drinking too much. Goodbyes are hard. We've now said goodbye to most of our friends here. Saying goodbye to the people who have become our "family" here is more difficult than I ever imagined.

Packing's nearly done...we're getting there...not long now. Oh, and to keep the hoards happy (right Adam? Beth? Mary? Ruan? Flick? and everyone else who complained I hadn't put the Sayonara party pictures up) I've updated the pictures. Check out July's pics to see the latest! (and note the time stamp on this post...that's dedication for you ;) and remember we're GMT+9)

It's HOT. Really bloody hot. We're in training for Okinawa and China. Anyway...enough of the complaining. Things are pretty good here...travel arrangements nearly complete...oh...and Tom's better!!! :)
