While visiting Okinawa, I came across many weird and wonderful plants, many of which I'd never seen before.  I'm afraid I'm not much of a horticulturalist, and know next to nothing about plants.  Here are some pics for your enjoyment.  If you know what the plants are, then good for you.  If you know what they are and want me to update this page to provide the names, then please e-mail me!

A tree on one of the main streets in Ishigaki "City"

(Ishigaki Island)

Some beautiful bright red flowers.  No idea what they are, but they were
all over the place, and very striking.

I'm fairly sure this one's a thistle

(Ishigaki Island)

A crow sits in the branches of a "Fire Tree" (I think that's what

Katie calls it).

It could be erythrina, but I'm not certain.

One thing came to my mind when I saw this tree - fractals

(ok, so there not quite fractals...maybe you had to be there...)

A really weird palm tree type thing, that looked like it was made up of

at least three different plants

Sensitive Mimosa!

I recognise this one from GCSE science with Miss Sayers.  I was

fascinated by it then, and I still am now.  This one plant gave me

a full 15 minutes of fun!

(for those who don't know - if you stroke, shake, or brush past these

leaves, they fold up)
