Kyoto - old capital of Japan, and whose name means "Capital Metropolis".  Tom and I took time out to visit Kyoto for the long weekend (another National Holiday!!!).  Only, I think half of Japan had the same idea!  I've managed to avoid getting people in the photos most of the time (quite miraculous really), but I have deliberately taken a few of the hoards.

That said, we had a really wonderful time.  We were lucky enough to visit in time to see the changing of the leaves, and it really was beautiful.  One of the best places we visited was Nijojinya - a Samurai house, passed down through generations, with lots of hidden escape routes and traps.  Unfortunately, we weren't allowed to take photos of it, so you're just gonna have to be content with these pickies.  Incidentally, I've chosen the best 49 out of over 200 that we took!

Kyoto has a lot to offer, and we have plans to revisit soon so we can try and see all the things we didn't manage to this time.

In re-organising these photos I found there were still far to many to put on one page...so...I've put them on four pages...

A Japanese friend sent an e-mail to me, the

latter part of which read
"let's Japanize you, yeah!"

Think I might be getting the hang of it!

I don't think he realised he was in the photo!

The dreaded MOCHI!

Yes, we ended up having to eat a complete meal of this vile stuff.

Ok, so it's not as bad as natto, but it comes close.  Mochi is pounded

rice.  It is pounded and pounded until it forms a kind of putty that

a master glazer would be proud of.  There are many mochi-related

deaths in Japan each year.  Apparently the Heimlich Maneuver

doesn't work.  Vacuum cleaners, however, do.
