This week was
dominated by the School Festival, although the Sports Day had to be postponed by
24 hours due to yet another typhoon. The photos here show more-or-less the
goings on at Haruko throughout the three-day festival.
I was lucky enough to have my own personal photographer on Day 1, as Tom stopped
by to watch the school play and join in with the activities.
This year, the play was about "What Happened After Momotaro". Momotaro is a popular Japanese fairy tale.

Preparing for the
Staff Play - the first event of the Festival... Yup, that's me after I let my colleagues near me with makeup. I'm supposed to be an oni - a fabled Japanese creature, like a mischievous goblin. |

Me, with two of the office ladies and Urai-sensei (far right), one of the Japanese teachers.
And YES, I am wearing socks with sandals. Disgraceful, I know, but it is a one-off... they're my only indoor shoes at work, and I had to take them off when I went on stage. (I was wearing the socks as part of the costume...). Just felt I had to justify that...! |

On stage: a pheasant talking to a chick? |
|
|
|
On stage: The hero, Momotaro - played by my supervisor and colleague,
Okada-sensei. |
| On stage: Oni-island. All the Oni looking out to sea. |

Sports Festival
Students are divided into four blocks according to the course they are taking at Haruko. It's a bit like the "house" system at home.
Each block had to make a mascot, and this is the winning entry

The four blocks get ready to do battle for the very impressive trophies. |
|
While most students compete in sporting events, some are chosen to take nursery school kids on a tour of the grounds in their carts. |
|
|
|
A fantastic relay race between the different clubs, including: kendo, judo, baseball, volley ball, basket ball, badminton, shodo (calligraphy), robotics and mechanics!

In the afternoon each block put on a display, much to the delight of the onlookers!
