"He who doesn't climb Mount Fuji once is a fool. He who climbs Mount Fuji twice is twice the fool."
- Japanese saying
And so it began. Packed and ready to go, we phoned for a taxi at 5.30am. No taxis - probably due to the heavy rain. We decided to drive to the station and leave the car there, leaving a key at Christina's and asking her to pick it up for us. So off we set. In the pouring rain. I've never seen anything like it.
On the way to the station we hit a puddle which was over a foot deep, spanning
maybe 50m or more. The car was not happy. We limped to the station
and ran for our train, the rain getting worse.
An express, two shinkansen (bullet trains) and two buses later, we were ready to begin our climb. We arrived at the 5th Station of Fuji-san at 5.00pm, already pretty tired!
Not long into our journey, I got a call from Rhen - a JET neighbour - to say the water was rising fast, and working it's way up the wall to my front door. The step up to the front door is quite high, but serious (and sudden) flooding in the city had hit our neighbourhood. See the photos.

5.45am, and Tom's ready for the expedition, with his new bag, new trousers and new boots.

Rain, like we've never seen it before. You can't really tell in this picture, but the road ahead is flooded. It was very scary!

Me, and my
Decision Tree. put all my stuff down and decided I had to choose right then and there was I going to turn back and sit on the bus, or was I going to press on. No such decision to be made this time. The Decision Tree had been conquered. |

Slipping and sliding down. Again, you can't tell how steep this is from the photo.
The descending trail is nothing but red dust and loose shale. And boy, does that red dust get everywhere!
